Three bins make width the critical measurement

Triple wheelie bin storage can bring general waste, recycling and garden waste into one tidy run. It also creates a much wider structure than the product photographs sometimes suggest. Measure the full usable span at ground level and again higher up, especially beside tapered walls, drainpipes or planted borders.

Do not plan around a perfect line on paper. Doors need room to open, bins need a reasonably straight route out, and the unit may need clearance for assembly or fixing. If the site falls across its width, check how the manufacturer expects the base to be prepared.

Look at each compartment

Overall external dimensions are only part of the decision. Confirm the clear width and height of each opening, whether internal posts reduce the usable space, and whether each lid can be opened independently. If those details are not published, the safest result is a manual check.

Plan for the heaviest bin

A full garden-waste or refuse bin can be awkward to turn. Put the bin with the least convenient route in the easiest compartment and check the front clearance with the doors fully open.

Not sure whether three bins will fit comfortably? Enter the available width and access measurements in the Fit Finder. If your household has four collection bins or recycling containers, compare four-bin storage before squeezing the site too tightly.

How to measure for triple wheelie bin storage

  1. Measure each bin at its widest and deepest point, including handles and wheels.
  2. Add the widths together, then compare that total with the store's stated internal compartment widths — not only its external width.
  3. Check the height needed to raise every lid without hitting the store roof or a wall.
  4. Measure the full door swing and the clear space needed to roll the centre bin out.
  5. Confirm the base is level and that the assembled store can reach the installation position.

Three 240-litre bins can vary by council and manufacturer, so the bin-count label alone is not proof of compatibility. If space is tight, use the measurement guide before comparing products.
