A green roof can make bin storage feel like part of the front garden rather than a box placed in it. Buy a unit designed for planting; do not assume a standard lifting lid can safely carry soil, retained water and mature plants.
Ask about the complete roof system
The useful specification covers more than the outer planter dimensions. Look for the permitted loaded weight, waterproofing, drainage route and how the planting tray is separated from the structure. Confirm whether the roof is fixed or still needs to open for access to the bins.
Plan for water and maintenance
Drainage should not discharge across doors, hinges or the collection path. Think about how you will water, weed and replace plants without climbing on the store. The chosen planting also needs to suit the site’s light, wind and exposure.
Check the base and access
A planted roof adds load, so follow the manufacturer’s base and anchoring instructions. Make sure any overhang, gutter or planting does not reduce lid clearance or make a full bin harder to remove.
